Starts within a second

On 75 occasions, a leader began a sentence less than 1 second after another leader finished.

Eby did so 29 times, Doerkson 39 times and Lowan seven times. Of the 75, 58 were between Eby and Doerkson.

How we counted

Times are seconds of speech in the CBC replay, from the first word of each sentence to its last, with pauses left out. Each leader sentence counts under one issue, and a rival counts as named at each use of a rival’s name, title or party. A direct question is a sentence ending in a question mark that a leader put to a rival on stage. Some 428 seconds of leader speech was assigned by turn order, the moderator’s cues or a short voice reading. A check by hand put about 1 in 20 of those sentences with the wrong speaker, which moves no leader’s total by more than about 10 seconds. The broadcast also carried recorded statements from CentreBC and OneBC, which are not counted here.

  • About 65 seconds of speech, 1.5 per cent of the leaders’ total, could not be matched to a speaker.
  • A sentence counts under the first issue it matches, so one on asking the wealthiest to pay more for seniors’ care counts as health care.
  • A start less than 1 second after another leader stands in for cross talk and says nothing about who was at fault.
